How to photograph coins for counting
- 1
Lay the coins flat in one layer
Spread them out face up or face down. A stack or a roll only shows the top coin.
- 2
Use a dark matte background
Silver and gold-coloured coins stand out on dark cloth. Soft, indirect light avoids bright reflections that blur the rims.
- 3
Sort by denomination first
Tallypic counts coins, not their value. Put each denomination in its own group, photograph the groups one at a time and multiply each count by its face value.

Photo example
Coins laid flat on a dark surface, with little overlap between them.
The tool's sample opens saved example markers; uploading your own photo runs a new count.
37 coins are marked in the tool's sample photo.
When to count coins from a photo
Shops, laundromats, and vending and arcade operators count coins when emptying a till or machine and before banking the takings, and collectors count them when cataloguing. Sort the coins by denomination, photograph each group, check the markers and multiply. The saved image of each group, with the total and the date, is a simple record of the count.
Questions about counting coins
Is there an app that counts coins from a picture?
You don't need to install one. Tallypic works in your phone's browser: open this page, tap Take a photo and shoot the coins from directly above. Check the markers, then save the marked image to your phone. There are free counts every day and no signup.
Can it add up the value of my coins?
Not directly. It counts how many coins are in the photo. Sort them by denomination, count each group separately and multiply each count by its face value.
Can I count a stack or roll of coins?
No, only the top coin of a stack is visible. Spread the coins in one layer first. If you have a lot, count them over several photos and add up the totals.
