How to photograph steel pipes for counting
- 1
Face the pipe ends
Keep the camera parallel to the end of the stack. A side view shows pipe lengths instead of separate openings.
- 2
Include the outer rows
Leave a small margin around the whole bundle so openings at the edges are not cut off.
- 3
Reduce glare inside the openings
Use even light and tap to focus on the pipe ends. Check very dark openings and shiny rims after counting.

An end-on view keeps the openings visible across the bundle.
The tool's sample opens saved example markers; uploading your own photo runs a new count.
100 steel pipes are marked in the tool's sample photo.
When to count steel pipes from a photo
Scaffolding rental yards and contractors count steel pipes every time a load goes out or comes back, and again at stocktaking. Rather than counting a bundle by hand on the truck, photograph its open ends, check the markers and save the marked image. It shows the total, the object type and the date, so the yard and the site can check the same picture.
Questions about counting steel pipes
Does it count both the rim and the hole?
The goal is one marker per pipe. Zoom into the result and remove any duplicate marks on a rim; add a marker to an opening that was missed.
Can I count square tubes with this page?
This page starts with the steel pipe model. For square tubes, choose Square tubes in the object picker before uploading your photo.
Can I count scaffolding pipes when they're rented out or returned?
Yes, as long as the open ends are visible. Take one photo per bundle in the yard or on the truck, check the markers and add up the bundle totals yourself. Look closely at the outer rows and at any pipes that stick out past the rest.
