How to photograph pvc pipes for counting

  1. 1

Shoot the open ends straight on

Stand square to the end of the load so each pipe shows as a ring. An angled shot makes the openings overlap.

  2. 2

    Light the load evenly

The back rows inside a truck or warehouse can be dark. Open the doors fully, use daylight or even lighting and avoid flash glare on white plastic.

  3. 3

    Check nested and outer pipes

Smaller pipes are often nested inside larger ones for transport. Zoom into the openings for nested pipes, and check the outer rows and the top edge.

When to count pvc pipes from a photo

Plastic pipe factories, distributors and plumbing contractors count PVC pipes when loading a truck, receiving a delivery and doing stocktakes. Counting hundreds of white rings by eye is easy to get wrong. Photograph the ends of the load, check the markers and save the image, which shows the total and the date, so the shipper and the receiver check the same picture.

Questions about counting pvc pipes

Is there an app to count PVC pipes?

You don't need to install one. Tallypic works in your phone's browser: open this page, tap Take a photo and aim at the open ends of the load. Check the markers, then save the marked image to your phone. There are free counts every day and no signup.

Will a pipe nested inside another be counted?

Check those yourself. A nested pipe sits inside a larger opening and can be missed. Zoom into the result and add a marker for each nested pipe, or count nested pipes separately.
