How to photograph screws for counting
- 1
Spread them out
Tip the screws onto a flat, plain surface and spread them so none lie on top of each other. A heap hides the screws underneath.
- 2
Use a matte background and soft light
Steel and zinc-plated screws reflect light. A matte grey or dark sheet and soft, indirect light keep each outline clear.
- 3
Check touching and upright screws
Zoom into screws lying end to end or crossing each other, and screws standing on their heads. Each should have exactly one marker.

Photo example
Screws spread apart on a grey surface, so each head and thread is visible.
The tool's sample opens saved example markers; uploading your own photo runs a new count.
62 screws are marked in the tool's sample photo.
When to count screws from a photo
Hardware shops, assembly lines and maintenance workshops count screws when repacking bulk stock into bags, checking a delivery or doing a stocktake. Weighing works for big lots, but a bag that comes up short still has to be counted piece by piece. Spread the screws, photograph them, check the markers and keep the saved image, which shows the total and the date, as a record.
Questions about counting screws
Is there an app that counts screws?
You don't need to install one. Tallypic works in your phone's browser: open this page, tap Take a photo and shoot the spread-out screws from above. Check the markers, then save the marked image to your phone. There are free counts every day and no signup.
Can I count nuts, washers or other small parts?
Nuts have their own model in the object picker. For washers, try Hollow objects (tube ends, rings) under General shapes, and check the markers before you use the total.
Should I count screws in the box or tip them out?
Tip them out. In a box or bag, screws lie on top of each other and only the top layer is visible. Spread them in one layer, count them, then put them back.
