How to photograph tablets for counting

  1. 1

    Make a single layer

Separate tablets so their outlines are visible. Avoid piles and tablets standing on their edges.

  2. 2

Match the background to the batch

Use a darker matte background for pale tablets. Keep the camera directly above the surface to reduce perspective overlap.

  3. 3

    Inspect scores and fragments

A score line does not make a whole tablet two items. Check split pieces and decide consistently what you intend to count before reviewing the markers.

A plain background and visible tablet outlines help you check the count.

When to count tablets from a photo

Pharmacy staff count tablets when dispensing loose medication, supplement packers when repacking a batch, and clinical trial teams when checking what a participant returns. Spread the tablets on a clean, plain tray, take one photo from above and check the markers. Every tablet found gets its own marker, so you don't lose your place the way you can when counting by hand.

Questions about counting tablets

Can it count white tablets on a white tray?

Low contrast can make edges hard to see. Try a darker plain background and even light, then review each marker.

What if tablets touch or overlap?

Spread them apart and retake the photo where possible. Otherwise, zoom in and adjust the marks; fully hidden tablets cannot be counted from the image.

Can I use it for a pill count?

Yes, as a counting aid. Spread the tablets on a clean, plain tray, photograph them from above and check every marker. The saved image shows the total, the object type and the date, so you have a record of the count. Tallypic doesn't identify the medicine or its strength, so confirm those separately.
