How to photograph eggs for counting
- 1
Shoot from directly above
Hold the camera over the middle of the tray or box so every egg shows as an oval. From an angle, the front rows hide the ones behind.
- 2
One layer per photo
For eggs packed in layers or trays stacked on top of each other, lift off each tray and photograph the layers one at a time.
- 3
Check gaps and broken eggs
Zoom into empty spaces, the edges of the box and any cracked or dirty eggs. Decide whether broken eggs count before you review the markers.

The tool's sample opens saved example markers; uploading your own photo runs a new count.
136 eggs are marked in the tool's sample photo.
When to count eggs from a photo
Egg farms, hatcheries and wholesalers count eggs when they collect from the houses, fill incubator trays and buy or sell by the case. Instead of counting tray by tray, photograph each tray or box from above, check the markers and save the marked image. The total and the date on it make a simple record.
Questions about counting eggs
Is there an app to count eggs?
You don't need to install one. Tallypic works in your phone's browser: open this page, tap Take a photo and shoot the tray from directly above. Check the markers, then save the marked image to your phone. There are free counts every day and no signup.
Can it count brown eggs?
Yes. Shell colour matters less than a clear outline around each egg. Brown eggs on a dark tray have less contrast, so zoom in and check them closely.
Can a hatchery use it to count hatching eggs?
Yes. Take each setter tray out or photograph it from directly above, one tray per photo. Count before setting and again after candling to record how many eggs were removed.
